Once you’ve decided to embark on a design journey, there are many factors to consider. Designers provide insight and analysis of your unique lifestyle that architects and contractors may not. Many of us perform an essential discovery phase where we define spatial layout, functionality and how a space should flow so that it serves your needs best as possible. Often this can involve crucial decisions such as moving a door or window, for example, to properly allow for furniture configurations. This is best done in ‘schematic’ or preliminary drawing phases before any physical work has begun. Over the years, I have found that many homeowners undertaking their first renovation or new construction / landscape project wait until their contractor suggests the need for a designer and this can often result in design issues in need of solutions that may be costly to consider once a project is already underway. My suggestion is to at least speak to a designer as early as possible to find out if your project would benefit from some early-on expertise.

I suppose this is a subjective question, expensive has a different definition from one project to the next. The one thing, however, that is consistent, is that designers present more opportunity to save money on the back end of a project than they cost in the beginning. Yes, hiring a designer poses an additional upfront cost to the project, but the tradeoff is a

properly executed plan with clear and concise decisions that have been made, organized, and presented to the contracting team for a more efficient method of execution. When decisions are unclear and made on the fly, they are usually more expensive in the long run due to the extended time it requires such as in project delays or contractor change orders. The cost of a designer often includes a smoother process and peace of mind.
